Lapstone Access Stairs

Access stairs 3D model

The recently installed Lapstone access stairs project, for Sydney Trains. Composite Engineering worked collaboratively with RKR Engineering to develop a detailed design. That met the requirements of AS1657:2018 and the complex shape of the slope.

The site was measured and a 3D model of the concrete footings was first developed. From there the design of stairs was developed and modelled.

The stairs were constructed using MaxiGRATE FRP grating for the stair treads and landings. The substructure utilised MaxiSTRUCT structural FRP profiles. The design was complete is MaxiRAIL handrail system.

The stairs, landings, and handrails were fabricated and partially assembled for freight at Composite Engineering. The partially assembled parts were transported to RKR for final assembly and then installation on site.

The project posed many challenges due to the complex geometry and difficult access to the site. The high quality of the final installation is a credit to all involved.

The stairs followed the contours of the hillside and the landings supported on the concrete footings. Providing workers safe access to the tracks.

From the partially assembled parts leaving Composite Engineering the stairs were installed and handed over to the client in only 4 days.
